Silk Strings Exchange: A Celebration of Musical Excellence and Cultural Exchange

Sharjah Performing Arts Academy was honoured to host the first edition of the Silk Strings Exchange, a landmark artistic programme celebrating musical excellence, collaboration, and cultural exchange.

Held on Saturday, 24 January 2026, the one-day event brought together exceptional young musicians, distinguished faculty, and members of the wider community for a day of learning, performance, and connection.

Founded and directed by Dr Alexandros Spyrou, with Mr Gang Tian serving as Representative in China, and academic coordination by Dr Jeremy Leong and Dr Tianyang Wang, the programme reflected a shared commitment to nurturing emerging talent and creating meaningful platforms where tradition and innovation meet.

The event began with an Open Masterclass led by Dr Jie Song, offering participants an invaluable opportunity to engage with a leading pianist and gain practical insights.

Performances throughout the day included Piano Four Hands renditions of:

- Ouverture of The Barber of Seville by Gioachino Rossini

- Jasmine Flower (Chinese folk song, arranged by Kyunghoon Kim)

- The Rite of Spring by Igor Stravinsky

Performed by Xiaoyu Xu and Jie Song, these pieces highlighted the fusion of Western classical repertoire with traditional and contemporary influences.

The programme also showcased Chinese art songs, including:

- The Yue Folk’s Song (music by Qing Liu, lyrics from Songs of Chu)

- Beyond the Stream (music by Jiaqing Lin, lyrics by Yao Qiong)

These works were performed by Xiaoyu Xu (soprano) with Jie Song (piano), bringing lyrical storytelling and cultural heritage to life.

In addition, the event featured the Washington International Rachmaninoff Music Competition, further emphasising the academy’s commitment to providing emerging artists with global platforms to showcase their talent.

The day concluded with a Closing Ceremony & Concert featuring both Dr Jie Song and Ms Xiaoyu Xu, marking the successful conclusion of the inaugural Silk Strings Exchange.

The Silk Strings Exchange stood as a testament to the power of music as a universal language, one that transcends borders, connects communities, and inspires the next generation of artists.
